Can a Whale Swallow You?
The short answer
Not a humpback. Her mouth can open about 3 m (10 ft), wide enough to hold you, but her throat is only about the size of your fist. She has no teeth either, just baleen. So she can't chew you and she can't swallow you. She spits you out.
In theory, one whale could: a really big sperm whale. Nobody is known to have been eaten by one.
Big mouth, small throat
A humpback feeds by lunging with her mouth wide open. The grooved blubber under her jaw inflates as she takes in water. The gulp is huge. The throat behind it is not.
Where you'd expect teeth, she has baleen: rows of comb plates made of keratin, the same material as your hair and nails. Behind them is a throat about the size of a human fist. Nicola Hodgins of Whale and Dolphin Conservation put it plainly: once you're inside, it is "scientifically impossible" for the whale to swallow you.
It really happened, twice
In 2021, a commercial lobster diver off Provincetown, on Cape Cod, ended up inside a humpback's closed mouth. He said he was in there for about 30 to 40 seconds. Then the whale came up to the surface and spat him out. He left the hospital with a dislocated knee and no broken bones.
In 2025, a humpback in the Strait of Magellan, Chile, took a kayaker into its mouth along with his yellow kayak. It let him go after a few seconds. He came up first, and his boat came up a second later. His father filmed it from just yards away, and both of them made it back to shore unhurt.
Both whales were feeding. Charles Mayo of the Center for Coastal Studies said the Cape Cod whale was probably feeding on sand lance and took in the diver by accident. Jooke Robbins, from the same center, said the Chile whale was feeding and the kayaker was in its path. The people were in the way of breakfast.
The one exception
A sperm whale's voice box sits off to one side, so its throat is much wider than the throats of other giant whales. Giant squid are among its prey. Joy Reidenberg told Science News a very big adult sperm whale could swallow a person, but only a full grown male. Shane Gero told Popular Science that, to his knowledge, no one has ever been eaten by a sperm whale.
The sperm whale also has teeth, which the humpback doesn't: 20 to 26 large ones on each side of its lower jaw.

What the film simplifies
- The film says the lobster diver spent about 30 seconds inside. He said it was about 30 to 40 seconds.
- "Make a fist" is a rough guide. Sources say a humpback's throat is roughly the size of a human fist, which is a comparison and not an exact measurement.
- "In theory, one" has a size limit: Joy Reidenberg says only a very big, full grown male sperm whale could swallow a person.
- Most scenes draw krill as the whales' breakfast. Experts think the Cape Cod whale was probably feeding on sand lance.
- In the film the whales talk, the krill hop into her throat to show they fit, and the humpback brags "I eat anything." That's all cartoon. The two real people are drawn and never named.

A humpback's mouth can open about 3 m (10 ft). Why can't she swallow a person?
Answer
Her throat is only about the size of a human fist. A person fits in her mouth but can't fit down her throat, so she spits them out.
Why did the whales in 2021 and 2025 take people into their mouths?
Answer
They were feeding, and the people were in the way. Experts at the Center for Coastal Studies said the Cape Cod whale probably took in the diver by accident, and the kayaker in Chile was in the feeding whale's path.
At the end, the humpback says she'll chew next time, and the sperm whale asks "With what?" Why is he right?
Answer
Humpbacks have baleen, not teeth, so they can't chew. Sperm whales do have teeth: 20 to 26 on each side of the lower jaw.
The script
Host: Can a whale swallow you? Ask this humpback whale.
Humpback: That's not krill. That has elbows.
Humpback: Breakfast! Out of my way!
Host: Her mouth can open about 3 meters. You fit.
Humpback: Relax. I eat anything.
Humpback: Got this. Got this. I do not have this.
Host: Make a fist.
Humpback: Are you threatening me? In my own mouth?
Host: Relax. That's about how wide a humpback's throat is.
Krill: Excuse us. We fit.
Host: You don't.
Host: No teeth either. Just combs.
Host: Can't chew you. Can't swallow you. So she spits you out.
Humpback: Blech! You taste like rubber and panic.
Host: In 2021, a lobster diver off Cape Cod. About 30 seconds inside.
Humpback: 30 seconds? That poor whale.
Host: In 2025, a kayaker in Chile. Kayak and all.
Host: Both got out. They were in the way of breakfast.
Host: So can any whale swallow you?
Host: In theory, one. A really big sperm whale.
Sperm whale: Put the fist down.
Host: Nobody's ever been known to be eaten by one.
Humpback: Breakfast! Next time, I'm chewing.
Sperm whale: With what?
